Protein is essential to human health. Our bodies
are made up mostly of protein such as our hair, muscles, organs,
glands, and fingernails. Although, not all proteins are alike.
The human body requires approximately 20 amino acids for the synthesis
of its proteins, but the body can only make up 13 amino acids.
There
are essential and non-essential proteins. The 13 non-essential
proteins are proteins that the body is able to produce, and the
9 essential proteins are the proteins that the body is unable to
produce which the body needs to acquire from our diet.
A protein
is complete when it supplies enough of the essential proteins.
Meat, fish, eggs, and milk products are considered complete proteins.
Plant proteins can be combined to make complete proteins.
