Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in beans, fruit, seeds, and leaves around the world. Caffeine is mostly used as a stimulant for many of us to wake up in the morning. Many people drink tea, coffee or caffeine drinks to give them a boost, especially for a kickstart in the morning. Once the caffeine is consumed, it is absorbed by the body and carried around in the bloodstream. It kicks the adrenal glands to cause a release of blood sugar to produce energy, and in turn the adrenal glands release adrenalin and cortisone.
Most experts agree that moderate use of caffeine is not likely to cause any health problems. But,
longterm overuse of caffeine, together with stress and poor nutrition, can cause the adrenal glands to become exhausted and need more stimulation to work. This sets up a craving for stimulants where caffeine is needed to function and can have harmful longterm effects.
Substitutes include decaffeinated drinks (although these contain chemicals) and herbal teas.
